Help They Are Taking Over

Well, I'm currently in a battle with a bazillion little insects!!! They have taken over my few corn plants!!! The little buggers are ants.... just annoying!!!  If you even walk out to that plot.. there is so many ants that they are crawling up your leg within a few seconds.

 I had read that an organic way to be rid of those six legged pests was to mix Chili powder and water. Then just spread a barrier around your plants. Diligently been spreading the paste around for days, and it works until I water the garden. The ants are not even a bit scared of that stuff after it's water down. 

I'm at a loss, and really would love to save my sweet corn from this plague of ANTS! If anyone has some experience with an Ant problem and knows an organic way to remedy it..... Please Please Please share in a comment!!! 

~On a side note.... they aren't touching my tomatoes!

Bob Books Early Readers Review

I was recently given the opportunity to review the new Bob Books Early Readers from Scholastic, The New Puppy and Cupcake Surprise both written by Lynn Maslen Kertell and illustrated by Sue Hendra. Having used one of the Bob Book Sets with my daughter in Kindergarten, I was very excited to see what the leveled readers would be like.

The Bob Books early readers start at a Level 1 {Grade Level PreK- 1}. Each of these two books have over 150 words and use some Sight Words mixed with words to sound out. They also have flashcards you can cut out of the back. Each has a new word on one side, and the picture with a sentence from the story on the other.

The first book The New Puppy was released in January of 2012, and it includes the same simple illustrations that you have come to recognize and love from the Bob Books Sets. In this book Jack and Anna get a new puppy from an animal shelter. They discover all the fun and work that goes into having a new pet. What a cute story line for your kiddos!

The New Puppy includes long vowels, sight words, and repetitive language "says Dad, says Mom, Buddy runs..., Buddy falls..., Buddy is....." Perfect for the young reader! Bob Books knows just what kids need to help get them ready for longer sentences and chapter books later on. {This first book is a Guided Reading Level G and Lexile Level 330L for those who are familiar with these leveling codes.}

In Cupcake Surprise, which was released in February of 2012, Jack and Anna are on a mission to bake cupcakes to surprise their Dad for his birthday. After going over the ingredients they realize that they are out of flour, a quick trip to the store, and the two are baking. Buddy even makes an appearance which pulls both the books together. This is great story about family life and working together for beginning readers.

I just reviewed an awesome fan...
the Ozeri Brezza II Dual Oscillating 10" Desk Fan!!!! 

First of all, the fan comes ready to use straight from the box! Love that I didn't need to put anything together to get started. For a smaller fan, I am surprised by how much air is being circulated, and how quiet it is. We have been going through a horribly hot heat wave here in Indiana, and this fan has been the best! 

I'm sure you are wondering about the Dual Oscillating part of the fan's name. It simply means, not only does this fan pivot left to right, but it will go vertical (up and down) as well. You can use this fan in both the winter months to circulate the hot air, and in the summer to pull that cooler air where you need it. Keeping the air flowing will help with those energy bills that drives us all nuts!

There are 3 settings for the fan speed 1- low, 2-medium, and 3- high. The Brezza II also has the same 3 settings for oscillating left to right. You just choose which one you want and whoosh! The air is zooming! When you come in from 106 degree weather,and feel like you are just cooked... this fan gives you the perfect cool down!!! 

My Memories Suite 3 Review

Recently I was given a great opportunity to review My Memories Suite v.3, a digital scrapbooking software. Now to be honest I was worried since I'm not a very crafty person at all. After I downloaded and started checking out the program it occurred to me that my inexperience with both this type of software and scrapbooking didn't matter at all! 

 

I have had the best time just playing around with all the ready made templates this program offers from Christmas and holidays to seasons and school themes....  they have a little bit of everything already for you to simply add photos to. You can put together a scrapbooking page in minutes or if you feel like making changes and adding your own personal touch you can easily do that as well.

Just Pinch Those Suckers

Well, I was going to try and study up this week for an awesome beginner "how to" post on taking care of tomatoes. Unfortunately my life....been crazy this week.... wasn't going to let that happen. Here's two little bits of information that I have picked up so far.=)

FYI- We found these on sale for $1 at Rural King.

1- Tomatoes need a cage.   

I'm sure this sounds simple to those veteran gardeners, but people like me just starting out with their first garden have no idea. 

When tomatoes start growing they will get a lot larger than you expect. These simply help support the plant which will need it when all those big juicy tomatoes come on.

This sucker just got pinched!

2- You need to prune or really just pinch the suckers off your tomato plants.  

This is a very easy process, and it keeps the plants from becoming too large.
